In the beginning estonian embroidery with single-sided surface was called in the German style white or color embroidery (buntstickerei), then flower pattern. On Muhu first time this style was called lankimine (sewing long rare stitches), then the upper seam and today almost all embroideries of this style are called Muhu embroidery.
After the period of embroidery a cross on Muhu the main embroidery became one-sided satin – about 1910-1920. The embroidery of that period is significantly different from the modern embroidery.

In the beginning of 20 century young country women started to work in Läänemaa and Pärnu. There they got acquinted with local handicraft. That time there were already blankets-carpets with the the floral pattern on the red base in Läänema, and it was a revelation for Muhu women. The first blankets which reached Muhu were made by Läänemaa masters. Women from Muhu got the necessary skills and developed their own style. Soon Muhu and Läänemaa blankets were absolutely different.
„Muhu tikand“/Muhu embroidery brand was established by association of folk handicrafts UKU (1966-1993). UKU had a very high requirements to the quality and development of handicraft production, and Muhu embroidery became well sold brand. The products of this brand produced UKU workshos all over Estonia. In order to definite Muhu embroidery it is necessary to understand how it is connected with time, the situation and the people, together with Muhu history and development.
Embroidery is a life-style for Muhu. People are different, so there are some embroideresses who has their own creative writing and others who embroider on the pattern.Different embroideresses had developed a common Muhu style, total synergetics, associated with the experience of generations. Muhu embroidery is not a general concept, it is not tied to the current moment. This is combination of different skills and talents. The assessment of the people is still the main measure for this handicraft.
Sleight of hands and skills are very important part of Muhu embroidery..It is necessary to have sense of color and composition and drawing skills, and this job deserves respect and admiration. Muhu embroiderers develop their creative writing and style throughout their life, and are successful in their work.
